Red Oak Description
Quercus rubra

Red Oak: aka Northern Red Oak, Southern Red Oak, Canadian Red Oak.

Colour: Sapwood lighter in color than heartwood with most pieces showing a reddish to pink tone.

Grain: Coarse, open grain wood. Plain sawn exhibits plumed or flared grain. Growth rings highly visible. Riftsawn exhibits linear appearance and less figure; quarter sawn shows medullary rays and more prominent flaking.

Janka Hardness:
1290 lbs of dent resistance.

Finishing: Stains and finishes well. Strong contrast between spring and summer wood due to porous nature of the species.

Notes: a commodity wood species used throughout the flooring industry.
